Winter can be a tough time for our communities. Cold weather, busy homes, and time spent indoors mean viruses like the flu and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) can spread quickly—especially to our Elders and bubbas. But there’s something simple we can all do to help protect each other: get vaccinated.
Why Flu and RSV are a big deal in winter
Every winter, more people get really sick from these viruses. Some end up in hospital. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the risk is higher.
Both flu and RSV are highly contagious viruses that can spread quickly, especially in our close-knit communities. While anyone can get sick, these viruses can be especially dangerous for our Elders, pregnant women, young children, and people with chronic health problems like diabetes or asthma.
But here’s the good news: vaccines work. They help stop you getting really sick and protect the people you love too.
How immunisation helps our communities
Vaccines don’t just protect individuals—they protect the whole mob. When more people are vaccinated, it’s harder for viruses to spread, and that helps protect those who can’t get vaccinated or are more vulnerable.
Let’s look after each other
Getting vaccinated is a simple but powerful way to show we care. It’s about keeping our families strong, protecting our culture, and making sure our communities thrive through the winter and beyond. At Babbingur Mia we have the flu vaccine ready to go and the RSV vaccine for pregnant women who are between 28 & 36 weeks gestation. Immunisation of the mother in pregnancy has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of a severe infection in the newborn baby.
Let’s stay strong, stay warm, and stay well this winter—together. Give us a call on 9550 0900 to chat about flu and RSV vaccines.
Yarn with family and help us to share this message with your mob.
